Corrosion Survey

What is a Corrosion Survey?

A natural gas Corrosion Survey takes place every three years and is a proactive safety measure designed to identify and prevent corrosion at the residential gas meter — a natural process that can affect metal gas piping and meters over time due to exposure to air, moisture, and other environmental factors. This survey is important because if left unchecked, corrosion may occur, which can lead to service interruptions.

The Atmospheric Corrosion Survey is done across the whole City of Long Beach for each residential gas meter over a three-year period. Below is a map of the atmospheric corrosion survey service area and an estimated list of years when you can expect to see Long Beach Utilities gas technicians in your area performing the survey.

Please Note: Conducting the surveys may require Long Beach Utilities employees to enter your property line, but we will never demand to enter the inside of the physical structure of your home. Gas meters and associated infrastructure are often found in areas such as your front yard, side yard, and/or backyard. We will need to access these areas to conduct a full inspection of a natural gas meter (LBMC 15.40.190). All Long Beach Utilities technicians are required to carry City of Long Beach identification and may provide supervisor contact information upon request.

If you receive a doorhanger (pictured above), it means that one of our Long Beach Utilities gas utility technicians stopped by to try to perform a federally mandated atmospheric corrosion survey at your gas meter. If the gas meter inspection status is marked as "INCOMPLETE", we ask that you make an appointment and call the phone number at the bottom of the notice at your earliest convenience for our crews to complete their inspection. Thank you for your cooperation!
